The Posture of an Athlete | Sports Chiropractor in Manahawkin, NJ

Hey guys, it’s Dr. Nicole with Healing Hands and you’re catching me right in the middle of one of my workouts.

As I was doing my squat, I was thinking, what if you guys were at the gym? And you saw somebody who was doing a squat like this? Oh, why didn’t you just like, feel the need to run over and be like, Hey, man, are you okay? Like, don’t do your squat like that, because you’re gonna get hurt, you’re gonna get injured.

The Importance of Proper Posture in Weight Training

You know, if you saw from the outside a person’s posture, that off or that distorted, that they were gonna get injured. Why? Because that’s a weaker biomechanical structure. Right? So here’s my question for you. How do you know, a person’s posture on the inside is not as distorted to people or to the untrained eye? So what if what I’m saying is what if you have an athlete who’s lifting weights, and on the inside that we see on X ray, the posture or the spine is distorted, but we’re not quite able to yet or trained yet to see it from the outside? Do you think that increases the possibility of injury? While that athlete, especially a young athlete who’s in growth and development phases of his life, do you think that increases their possibility for injury? You’re thinking? Of course it does, Doc. Okay. Yes. And I would agree. But what about those who want to increase their performance? Well, just by changing a person’s internal structure or spinal biomechanics, we can actually increase the output mechanically, when a person is weightlifting. So I have a dumbbell here. So take a look at the difference in my squat. So if I distort the spinal structure, right, first of all, if I move the spinal structure, everything else moves. I don’t know if you can see this, but even my knee, my knee and my ankle are torque. That’s how that’s why postural distortions can even affect the function of your hips, your knees and your ankles. But if I distort my posture, and I go to do a squat, all the way down, I could like I could barely get up with this weight. But if I have true good posture, and a steady posture really easy, no problem at all.

So if you guys want to improve, improve your athletic performance, increase your weight at the gym, have your spine checked by a spinal corrective chiropractor, it seriously can make all the difference in the world.
